Marks and Spencer’s Uniform Dress

Sometimes I’m amazed at what shows up at thrift stores. The other day when we were in Wisconsin, I ran to the thrift store hoping to find a pair of pants for my oldest boy. I of course got sidetracked by the girls dresses and found this beauty. It is a Marks and Spencer’s school uniform dress from the 90’s. It is almost identical to the one I wore when I went to school in England, except for mine was brown and white. As it was a size 5 (just like my daughter) and in pink (her favourite colour), how could I resist. It goes perfectly with the little hand sewn vintage slip I also found her in a different thrift store in town. I just love when I find things that bring back such wonderful childhood memories for me, and to see the joy a new pink dress and pretty slip brings to my daughter is great.

How do you do this? You find THE best stuff. So envious…….

  2. My children wear dresses just like that for school every day. From Marks, of course. Some things never change.

That’s just the thing little girls are still wearing to school in the UK – although there are lots of different colour-ways, depending on the school uniform colour.

I wonder how a Marks and Spencer’s school dress ended up in Wisconsin? If that dress could talk it would have quite a tale to tell.

Oooh that looks so cute and that slip is adorable.
My youngest daughter wears dresses like that to school to but hers are red and white checked, I think I’ll be a little bit sad when she decides she’s too old for school dresses.

I saw your blog on Petit Filoux’ blogroll and thought ‘M&S dresses on the Prairie??’

My daughter wears the green versions, or at least she did until this term. They have been deemed babyish now she is 10. i love them though and they are exactly like your right down to the white ric rac detail. Plus, they don’t need ironing!

I’m going to have a nose round your lovely looking blog now.

The dress looks gorgeous with the vintage slip.
My DD1 started school here in England in 1997 when she was nearly 5 and she wore the identical M&S dresses except in blue.
They still do little checked school dresses but the styles are a bit more updated now .

Funny! Did you have a summer uniform and a winter uniform? Ours was that dress except in blue and white with our blazer for the summer and then winter we wore white shirts and ties and a wool skirt. My husband couldn’t believe it when I taught him how to tie a tie!!
