Children of the Forest is one of the babe’s favourite books. It’s about a family of tiny forest people who happen to have four children, two boys, two girls, just like us. Daisy, the littlest has platinum blond hair just like the babe. They live in the forest, our house backs up into forest, and my littlest just loves blending into things just like the forest children have to do sometimes. They gather nuts, berries, and mushrooms for the winter and their mama knits them hats and sweaters too. They have toadstool caps so that if they need to blend in and not be seen, they can just squat down and disappear into their surroundings.

I knew that the babe would absolutely adore to have her own toadstool cap, so the search was on. I couldn’t find a pattern that was quite right until I found this pattern. I tweaked it slightly by eliminating the little tail at the top of the hat and it turned out perfectly. Then I needle felted some creamy roving into little toadstool spots all around the outside. She adores the hat, and I am so thrilled that I was able to pull it off. This was my first time needle felting and despite the fact that I broke a few needles, it was a lot of fun.

The babe always wants to take pictures with mommy’s camera, so I knew this adorable wooden camera would be absolutely perfect. It is used on a daily basis as she goes around snapping her own pictures. It’s really well made and the detail is fantastic, I know it’s going to get lots and lots of use over the years.

Once again I am having problems with WordPress and photos. So instead, I will just give you a quick update. This last week hasn’t gone exactly to plan with extra dental appointments, one child with a fly type bug (fingers crossed nobody else gets it) and lots of preparations. Soon we will be taking a cross country trip, only to the East Coast this time. First stop Maine, second stop Virginia. Our first leg of the journey will be 33 hours (not counting stops), so I am a little nervous how that is going to go. I’ve got plenty of ginger chews ready for our girl who half the time gets car sick, and lots of games etc. for those who don’t. I’ve got a couple of books and some knitting for me as projects while sitting in the dark in the hotel as the children are sleeping. I always think that the hardest part of a trip is getting out the door. Making lists, digging out suitcases, trying to tidy the house before you leave and all the last minute laundry and packing. Hubby will be gone on business for the three days before we leave so that will add a little extra work while he’s gone. We’re all very excited to be going away for some fun family time and I will try to post occasionally while we are gone. I do have posts planned from now until the end of the week, so hopefully I can start uploading pictures soon.

Sorry to have disappeared for a bit. Last week I got a migraine that lasted almost three days before it started turning into a regular headache. Then the next few days were spent catching up on housework, laundry etc. Over the weekend we had to take our computer back to Denver to have a part replaced, so it has been a busy, and definitely not normal week. This week is off to a much better start. Yesterday we made these Strawberry Barley Scones from the book Good to the Grain. She does a great job of describing the unique flavours of the different kinds of flours out there, and I am really excited to make more from this book. These scones were really, really good. Since we first got married, every Valentines Day Hubby and I have always cooked together after the kids have gone to bed. It started out as a way to celebrate without spending a lot of money on eating out when we didn’t have any extra cash and it has remained our tradition whether times were lean or not. I love to cook with him and it’s nice to make a meal without any distractions. Last night we made this Sausage and Kale Soup. Absolutely delicious and another plus is that it made a rather large pot, so I don’t have to double the recipe to feed all of us. I wasn’t able to take any photos, but trust me, if you like delicious, hearty soups, try it. Well, the wind has been atrocious around here, but we have had a few warmer days, perhaps spring is on it’s way. Hope everyone has a fantastic day.

Every year Christmas seems to come up so quickly and we all try to fit in so many things that last two months of the year. I really want Christmas to be calm and peaceful and a time for reflection and family and friends. So this year I am prepared, or at least getting that way. I am going to work on a project every month to make next Christmas easier. I can see how this could very easily turn into making it more stressful by adding so many projects that it just gets out of control, so I am making an effort to keep this simple and remember my ultimate goal, simplify and de-stress Christmas. This month I started a small notebook in which to organize my thoughts and write down things that might be good projects or gifts for next year. I have the ideas and where to find specifics, if I’ve already found directions somewhere. I can gather info and as the year progresses narrow some of those things down as I decide exactly what I’m doing. Each month on the 25th I will share with you what my project was for that month, and have some giveaways along the way. I’m really excited about this as next December I shall be fully prepared (in theory) and on track for a simple, beautiful Christmas. I’d love for you to join me, it would be great to have a whole bunch of ideas on the 25th of every month. Even if you get one thing done during the year in preparation for next year it should be a help, no pressure here. This is absolutely not meant to be a way to overload and cause more stress. Ok, so laundry calls, have a great day everybody. I’ll see you in a few days with a fun little Valentine’s project.

Turn one of your favourite children’s books into an audiobook with a familiar voice. Whether it’s for your grandbabies, nieces and nephews, your friends’ children, or even your own little ones, grab a copy of a much loved book and record yourself reading it. If you have the means, you can make an audio cd or just grab a tape recorder and cassette. Send the book and cd or tape all wrapped up and I guarantee it will be a hit. What are some of your favourite children’s books? I hope everyone is staying warm. Despite the fact that it is still technically autumn, it has been snowing every day for the past week here. We are firmly into winter mode, trying to stay warm and happy with four children who have to spend the majority of their time indoors. It’s a little adjustment but we’re getting there. I’ve got some more high impact low budget gift ideas coming soon, hope you enjoy this one.

I really like her style of cooking and it seems to fit in a lot with the way we eat. I have been wanting to try this recipe for a while now and I finally got around to it. The noodles are cooked in chicken stock and coconut milk instead of water and they are delicious. The stir-fry is filled with chicken, carrots, snow peas, mushrooms, ginger and garlic and it really is scrumptious. This week I have been dealing with mastitis so I have been a bit run down, but over the next few weeks I plan on sharing lots of high impact, low budget gift ideas for the Christmas. I have been avoiding the thought of the holidays, but I really should get in gear as there isn’t that much time left if I am making gifts. I hope you all are doing well, I will be back in a few with my first idea for Christmas gifts.
